The Dark Knight Returns is a Batman story written by Frank Miller with illustrations by Miller, Klaus Janson, and Lynn Varley in 1986. It is a limited series set in a possible future, portrayed as Batman’s last adventure. The story depicts Bruce Wayne as an old man, coming out of retirement to be Batman again.. The Dark Knight Returns isn’t the best Batman story ever. It’s not even Frank Miller’s best Batman story. Hell, it’s not Klaus Janson’s best Batman story. It’s not even the best Iconic-Superhero-Defeats-All-His-Enemies-Then-Fakes-His-Death-And-Retires story published by DC in 1986. (That’d be this one.)

Frank Miller’s take on Batman was poignant, introspective, and eventually downright insufferable with time.. Although he was already a comics legend in the making before tackling Batman, The Dark Knight Returns made Frank Miller practically a celestial being. Released in the same year as Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’s seminal Watchmen, The Dark Knight Returns helped to move the comic book medium irrevocably to a darker, more sophisticated, and – dare we say – more literary level, leaving its.
